چکیده

Cosmological shock waves are a ubiquitous consequence of cosmic structure formation. They play a major role in heating baryonic gas in the large scale structure of the universe. In this contribution we study the shock-heated gas in connection with shocks themselves, using a set of N-body/hydrodynamic simulation data of a ΛCDM universe. The distributions of shock speed and temperature of shock-hated gas both should reflect the depth of gravitational potential of associated nonlinear structures, so their morphology. From their distributions we find, in addition to hot gas in and around clusters/groups and warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM) with T = 10 − 10 K mostly in filaments, there is a significant amount of low temperature WHIM with T < 10 K distributed mostly as sheet-like structures. The low temperature WHIM was heated and collisionally ionized mainly by shocks with vsh . 150 km s , while photo-ionization by the UV and X-ray background radiations is important for metal ions. Not only the WHIM with T = 10 − 10 K but also the WHIM with T < 10 K make up a significant fraction of gas mass, implying the low temperature WHIM could be important in resolving the missing baryon problem. The shock-heated gas in filaments and sheets are manifested best through emissions and absorptions in soft X-ray and far UV. We confirm that the WHIM with T = 10− 10 K makes significant contributions to the soft X-ray background, absorptions of highly ionized species such as OVII and OVIII in AGN spectra, and line emissions from OVII and OVIII ions, as pointed by previous studies. However, the WHIM with T < 10 K is the major contributor to absorptions of lower ionized species such as OV and OVI, because these photo-ionized ions are most abundant in sheets of low density and temperature. Large-scale Structure Shocks at Low and High Redshifts

Cosmological simulations show that, at the present time, a substantial fraction of the gas in the intergalactic medium (IGM) has been shock-heated to T & 105 K. Here we develop an analytic model to describe the fraction of shocked, moderately overdense gas in the IGM. The model is an extension of the Press & Schechter (1974) description for the mass function of halos: we assume that large-scale...

Shock Waves in the Large-Scale Structure of the Universe

Cosmological shock waves are induced during hierarchical formation of large-scale structure in the universe. Like most astrophysical shocks, they are collisionless, since they form in the tenuous intergalactic medium through electromagnetic viscosities. The gravitational energy released during structure formation is transferred by these shocks to the intergalactic gas as heat, cosmic-rays, turb...

Baryons in the Warm-hot Intergalactic Medium

Approximately 30− 40% of all baryons in the present day universe reside in a warm-hot intergalactic medium (WHIM), with temperatures between 10 < T < 10 K. This is a generic prediction from six hydrodynamic simulations of currently favored structure formation models having a wide variety of numerical methods, input physics, volumes, and spatial resolutions. Most of these warm-hot baryons reside...

Thermal and Dynamical Evolution of Primordial Gas Clouds On the Formation of First Luminous Objects

We investigate the thermal and dynamical evolution of primordial gas clouds in the universe after decoupling. Comparing the time-scale of dynamical evolution with that of fragmentation, we can estimate the typical fragmentation scale. We propose the following scenario of the formation process of first luminous objects consisting of large number stars. First, by pancake collapse of the overdensi...

The Intergalactic Medium and Soft X-ray Background

I present an overview of some of the recent advances in our understanding of the distribution and evolution of the ordinary, baryonic matter in the universe. Two observations that strongly suggest that most of the baryons seen at high redshift (z ≥ 2) have turned into some forms yet undetected at z = 0 are highlighted. With the aid of large-scale cosmological hydrodynamic simulations, it is sho...
